Path of Exile Item Upgrading
In Path of Exile, item upgrading is one of the most effective ways to upgrade your gear without relying on big-ticket drops or trade. This article will teach you how to upgrade your gear effectively.
Upgrades to equipment provide an additional bonus to the item's stats. This bonus scales according to the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.
Components
Upgrade components are the things that improve your armor and weapons more effective. You can locate them by destroying enemies, buying them from karma sellers or finding them in item-spheres. They can also be rescued from equipment that has them, or through the highest-quality salvage kits like the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. In contrast to other items upgrade components, upgrade components aren't destroyed when removed from an item.
Upgrade components are typically used to upgrade an item, but they can also be used for other reasons. They can be stacked to boost the value of an upgradeable item or they can be used to increase the experience gained by upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can also be made to offer additional benefits. A crafted glyph can increase the chance of upgrading its target while an upgrade boosts the attack or defense attributes of weapons.
Selecting an upgrade template from the GUI will allow you to bind it to an item. This will show a list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. You can also utilize the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either instance the item will be upgraded once enough upgrade components are gathered.
Each component is assigned an experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item gains when upgraded with that component. For instance, organic components have a an experience multiplier that is higher than mechanical ones. It is therefore best to upgrade with organic components until you have reached the experience multiplier of the next level of the weapon or gear, and then change to mechanical upgrades.
Each item comes with an upgrade maximum number that it is possible to receive. The number of items that can be upgraded is determined by their upgradeable rank and the type of upgrade they can receive. For instance, the most expensive possible weapon upgrade is a weapon of tier 10. However, the most common upgrade for weapons is the tier 6 weapon and a tier 5 armor upgrade.
Sets
A set is a collection of objects which all have the same bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least one time, and each upgrade boosts the guaranteed bonuses. Rerolling

In addition to rerolling items players can also change the identity of any equipment by interfacing with an upgrader NPC. upgrade item will change the identification as a weapon to armor or reverse the process. Its base stats and requirements remain the same. The change is permanent and will affect all characters that have the gear in question.
The player can also upgrade the level of the item for any equipment that is equipped. This is accomplished by engaging with an upgrader NPC, and then obtaining upgrade components. The amount of damage and defense that the item is able to receive when leveled up can be seen below the cost and upgrade decrease percentages in the upgrade template window. Aside from practice equipment, all other weapons and armor gain the same stats when they are upgraded. item upgrade will determine the worth of these stats.
